TRON — the Chinese-based smart contracts platform led by Justin Sun — announced a $100 million fund to support the blockchain gaming ecosystem. The game fund is called TRON Arcade and will invest up to $100 million in blockchain gaming development over the next 3 years.
The announcement follows TRON’s dapp update claiming increasing adoption of the platform by dapps and users. CoinPayments also recently integrated TRX, BNB, and BTC payments into BitTorrent for Pro and Ad-free products.
TRON Dapp Gaming
TRON has emphasized both content distribution and dapp gaming since launching. The TRON Arcade fund is a sizeable incentive for developers to have their projects funded. TRON’s primary market is in Asia too, one of the hubs for gaming, particularly e-sports.
TRON’s team members have identified gaming as a target since they view games as the most common early-stage platform applications that become popular. Additionally, blockchain-based gaming is currently lacking options, ultimately due to scalability problems.
While TRON has faced fair criticism for its contentious origins, the platform has continued to build on its launch earlier this year. Attracting developers in an industry with a large shortage of developers — and also many of them working on other platforms — is a formidable challenge. TRON’s effort to incentivize developers is not only limited to the TRON Arcade fund either. TRON is soon launching its TRON Accelerator program with $1 million in prizes.
The first major conference organized by TRON — the International Nitron Summit — is also scheduled for January 2019.
BitTorrent and TRON
Justin Sun — TRON’s founder — controversially acquired BitTorrent earlier this summer, the most popular P2P communication in the world. Since then, TRON and BitTorrent have been undergoing development of a project known as Project Atlas.
The project aims at restructuring seeding and downloading with an incentive system that is integrated with TRON. The scheduled release and details of the project are unclear at this point.
BitTorrent’s future integration with TRON has some interesting implications, however. TRON’s primary focus is touted as a decentralized content distribution platform for the Web 3.0. Integrating with BitTorrent — a massive P2P protocol — to deliver content may augment BitTorrent’s capacity regarding download speeds and seeding. Conversely, many outside observers see TRON’s integration with BitTorrent as an attempt to legitimize the cryptocurrency that has some noteworthy and well-founded criticisms.
